EXPERIENCE THE FLAVOURS OF SOUTH AFRICA
1ST CONTACT TO HOST THE UK'S ONLY SOUTH AFRICAN FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL
1st Contact is proud to announce it is hosting the 'Flavours of South Africa' Festival in London on Saturday July 6th. The festival will be showcasing South Africa's finest wines and food, incorporating a diverse mix of the distinctive flavours South Africa has to offer, from potjiekos and sosaties to Constantia Chardonnay and Franschhoek Pinotage. For just £20 a ticket this is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all things South African and get a true taste of home.
South African Pete Gottgens, chef and proprietor of the renowned Springbok Grill and Fish Hoek restaurants in London, will be heading up the gastronomic delights at Flavours of South Africa. Pete has, for many years, been a highly regarded ambassador for South African food and he regularly receives critical acclaim and awards.
Gottgens' emphasis is on fresh, simple ingredients, which maximise the natural flavours of the food. 'It should be the ingredients that dazzle, not the wizardry of the chef" he explains. For this reason Pete is currently preparing an exclusive menu for Flavours of South Africa, which will focus on the highest quality meat, poultry and game, not forgetting the finest seafood from the waters around South Africa. Dishes featured will include Mozambique king prawns peri-peri, Cape Malay pickled fish, Kingklip and Snoek, bobotie samoosas, Tulbagh stew, Hout Bay yellowfin tuna, sosaties and springbok fillet.
The desert boasts a selection of South African favourites, amongst which includes Dom Pedro with Amarula, Kahlua or fresh strawberries; malva pudding with fresh berries and thick cream, koeksisters and milktart.
South Africa has an excellent reputation for producing highly distinctive, world class wines and Flavours of South Africa will also be showcasing some of the finest examples the country has to offer. There will be five separate wine tents each featuring different regions including Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Constantia/Robertson and Tulbagh/Wellington/Swartland/Worcester. Each region will feature approximately five wineries, all offering a range of their wines. Visitors will then be able to work their way around the regions, tasting the very best that South Africa has to offer.
On stage Flavours of South Africa will feature a full programme of unplugged and live performances flown over from South Africa especially for the day. Artists include Folk rockers Henry Ate, one of the most original and promising bands to come out of South Africa, who will perform their unique brand of heartfelt folksy rock. Fans will be kept happy with a selection of perennial favourites like Hey Mister, Just and Waves of Salt. Also playing on the day will be Sons of Trout who have shared stages with acts such as Hootie and the Blowfish and Savuka. Other acts include comedy duo Boet 'n Swaer, consisting of the Albany farmers Brian Mullins and Alan Weyer leaning on a sneezewood fence gripping a couple of John Deers (beers) and bantering in the local lingo. The live entertainment will be presented on a central stage within view of all the wine and food tents so visitors will be able to relax on the grass in front of the stage and soak up the atmosphere.
The festival is taking place on Saturday 6 July 2002 from 12 noon to 8pm at Richmond Athletic Grounds, Richmond, London. Tickets can be booked online at www.1stcontact.co.uk at a cost of £20. Flavours of South Africa is proud to support the Red Cross Children's Hospital of South Africa. They will be donating 50p from each online booking to the children's hospital; there will also be a further collection on the day.
